Recently, Columbia Gorge CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) held a heartfelt recognition event to honor the incredible contributions of its dedicated volunteers. This gathering shone a light on the vital role CASA plays in advocating for abused and neglected children, with a special spotlight on its team of around 40 passionate volunteers who tirelessly work to amplify the voices of vulnerable youth.
One of the standout honorees was Monica Carson, who received the prestigious Susan Erickson Award for Excellence. Monica has been an unwavering advocate for her CASA youth for three and a half years—an impressive tenure that accounts for over 90% of this young person's time in care. Her steadfast commitment has profoundly impacted this child's life, fostering a bond built on trust and understanding.
"Monica’s creativity and thoughtfulness in her advocacy truly set her apart," said Leah Campbell, Program Coordinator of Columbia Gorge CASA. "She goes above and beyond to engage her youth in new experiences."
Monica’s journey with her CASA youth is a testament to her diligence. She consistently submits detailed reports and maintains regular monthly visits, ensuring that she is not just a presence but an active advocate. The CASA staff have had the privilege of witnessing the meaningful relationship between Monica and her youth, marked by open communication and genuine care. Monica actively listens to her youth’s thoughts and concerns, thoughtfully considering how best to support and guide them.
“Monica exemplifies the spirit of CASA,” Campbell added. “Her dedication not only enriches her youth’s life but also inspires our entire community to advocate for children in need.”
Columbia Gorge CASA remains deeply committed to its mission of providing compassionate and effective advocacy for children in foster care. Thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers like Monica Carson, the organization continues to uplift and empower those who need it most.
