Advocate Spotlight: Ivy Velarde

In November 2022, Ivy Velarde took a significant step in her life by becoming a CASA volunteer, dedicating herself to advocating for vulnerable children. Just two months into her journey, she embraced the challenge of a courtesy CASA case, stepping in to support a child placed in a local county but whose jurisdiction fell under a different CASA program. This role allowed Ivy to be an essential lifeline, providing invaluable insight and care for a child far from home.

From the moment she was appointed, Ivy became a steadfast support system for the child, advocating tirelessly until they found a permanent home. She championed her CASA child’s needs, ensuring their voice was heard and their story powerfully conveyed in court.

Residing in the stunning Columbia River Gorge for over 13 years, Ivy even commutes from Goldendale to The Dalles for her cases. When asked about her motivation to become a CASA, she reflects on her “inspiration from my mother and granddaughter.” Ivy finds immense joy in her role, describing it as an honor to advocate for children who need a voice: “Each case is so unique. Building a special connection with a child is incredibly rewarding.”

Despite the challenges of advocacy, Ivy maintains a positive outlook, crediting her CASA peers and staff as a crucial support system. “I haven’t found it stressful so far,” she notes, highlighting the collaborative spirit within the CASA community.

Now, Ivy is excited to announce that she’s taken on her second case! She encourages anyone with a desire to make a difference to join her in this vital work: “If you have the heart to help a child, do it!”
